We recently posted a notice about the Imaging USA pre-convention class on Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a network of volunteer professional photographers who provide the gift of portraiture to families whose infants will never leave the hospital.

This training class is actually OPEN TO ANYONE interested in the group, not just the NILMDTS volunteer photographers themselves. It's a great opportunity to learn, from those who know best, what is involved with this heart-warming nonprofit.

Phoenix Convention Center Virtual Tour

Get your first look at the new Phoenix Convention Center, home to Imaging USA 2009

Hi, Lenny Taffel here, your Director of Events for Imaging USA.

I’ve just returned from a visit to Phoenix, Ariz., where I was making sure that everything is on schedule and up to par. Though it may sound corny, I’m so excited! Imaging USA 2009 is going to be AWESOME! There’s a lot to look forward to:

The layout of the Phoenix Convention Center campus makes it very easy to get around, which is a very good thing because you don’t want to miss a minute of your chosen programs or the Imaging Expo. In just seconds you can zip back and forth between the Imaging USA classrooms and the exhibition hall via the skywalk, located on the same floor as both locations. And if you ever do need pointed in the right direction, you can just look for me or any of the other Imaging USA staff members and volunteers (we’ll be the ones in the orange shirts!)

Not only is the layout great, the entire convention center is eco-friendly with top-of-the-line enhancements (it’s brand-new for you, my friends). The $600 million expansion triples the original size of the center, and totals nearly 900,000 square feet of space that is inviting, comfortable, and easy to navigate. Talk about perfect timing for Imaging USA! It’s definitely one of the best—if not THE best—convention center that has housed Imaging USA.

So you might be wondering about things outside the walls of the convention center…Well, let me tell you, they’re going to be a breeze to experience! The METRO light rail train will make it sooo easy and cost-effective to get from the airport to your hotel, the convention center, dining, entertainment, and anything you want to do around the city. (Plus, it’s pretty snazzy looking!)

Imaging USA 2009 is a great show in a great city…soon to be filled with the greatest folks in the world, (yes, I’m talking about YOU!) We’ve uploaded a video from our visit to Phoenix, a virtual tour that the convention center’s architect gave us. Take a peek at where we’ll be in January.

Web Update: Alternate Hotel List Posted

We still have rooms available at three of our contracted hotels--that means that 5 hotels are already sold out! But there is still time to book a great room at a great price. As of today, the Crowne Plaza   Airport, Holiday Inn Midtown, and Four Points by   Sheraton still had rooms available at special Imaging USA rates.

We have also just added a list of 30 other Phoenix hotels to the website. Visit our Additional Phoenix Hotels page for phone numbers and address to non-contracted hotels in the downtown Phoenix area.

Imagine Imaging...a bit earlier

Imaging USA—the first major photo event of the year, combining 3 co-located  conferences, a 600-booth tradeshow, international print exhibit, and over 8,600  photographers—heads to sunny Phoenix, Ariz., January 11-13, 2009. As you make  your travel plans, don’t forget the tantalizing array of pre-convention classes (January 8-10) and the PPA Charities’  Celebration Event (January 10). They might convince you to join Imaging USA  a bit earlier!

Perhaps the best part about pre-convention classes is that you can get more  individualized and in-depth instruction. With times the way they are, do you  need to understand more about financial management and planning? Take the  full-day Thursday class on the subject from Scott Kurkian and Tracy Harris.  PPA’s Board of Directors is even holding an all-day, Indoor/Outdoor  Speed-Shooting class, where you can learn from one after another in rotating  sessions.

There are many more options—just browse the choices (and descriptions) at www.ImagingUSA.org.

Aside from the extra education, coming early allows you to attend the PPA  Charities’ Celebration Event and the morning golf outing on Saturday! The food,  fun, and the ever-popular auctions will make you glad you checked into Imaging  USA early. Get started on this part of your planning with the Special Events  page on www.ImagingUSA.org.

The reasons to come—and come early—to Imaging USA keep piling up. Find  details on everything you need to know at www.ImagingUSA.org.

Created with evidence photographers' needs in mind: 2009 EPIC School

Education and the latest industry techniques are increasingly important for the evidence photographer. And attendees can get all that education and more at EPIC School @ Imaging USA 2009 (http://evidencephotographers.com/EPICschool.html) in Phoenix, Ariz., January  11-13, 2009.

This educational event focuses on making today’s evidence photographers better equipped and ready for the various situations they face. With topics like “Lighting Techniques for Crime Scenes,” “Photography of Trace Using Accutrans,” and the full day on photography basics (January 10), EPIC School aims to help all industry photographers—both new and advanced.

The new Evidence Photographer Certification (EPC), a unique certification for evidence photographers, will also be launched at EPIC School. Material will be presented through hands-on education with a well-respected evidence photography professional.

EPIC School brings its extensive offerings together for the second year with Imaging USA (www.ImagingUSA.org), the photo event by the Alliance of Visual Artists (AVA) that drew 8,600 photographers last year. The combination of these conferences assures attendees of even more valuable career information, including a full day of business education. And to keep the structure convenient, all programming will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center, which is also where the 600-booth Imaging Expo will be.

Created with sport & event photographers' business needs in mind: SEPCON 2009

When the economy slows—or customers believe it is—sport & event photographers tend to suffer, as do many small businesspeople. Good business knowledge and industry techniques are increasingly important to stand out and keep the business afloat. Photographers can get all that education and more at SEPCON @ Imaging USA (www.ImagingUSA.org/sepcon/) in Phoenix, Ariz., January 11-13, 2009.

SEPCON, hosted by the Society for Sport & Event Photographers (SEP), offers a new arrangement of the classes on January 11. T wo levels of programming will allow attendees to focus on their individual needs. The basic level, geared for attendees new to sport and event photography, featur es topics like “Packaging for Pricing” and “Action Photography: Printing on Site.” For the more expe rienced sport and event photographer, an advanced level is available with topics including “POSED” Action Photography Sports among others.

Three other photography conventions are co-locating with SEPCON . Imaging USA, the photo event that draws over 8,000 people, will be next door, along with its business education and 600-booth Imaging Expo . In addition, the Commercial Photography Conference (hosted by Commercial Photographers International) and EPIC School (hosted by Evidence Photographers International Council), will be nearby. By combining the resources of these international conferences, event organizers have provided the industry’s most diverse forum for photographic education.

“We’re really excited to be co-locating with Imaging USA again,” says SEP association manager Claire Werner. “This co-location allows us to continually expand SEPCON’s own offerings to photographers.”

SEPCON is the conference for those serious about learning what’s new in the sport and event photography market, or breaking into this field. For program, pricing and registration information, go to www.SEPsociety.com, www.ImagingUSA.org/sepcon, or call 877-427-3778.

Created with commercial photographers' needs in mind: 2009 Commercial Photography Conference

When the economy is slowing—or if customers believe it is—commercial photographers tend to suffer, as do many small businesspeople. Good business knowledge and industry techniques are increasingly important to stand out and keep the business afloat. And photographers can get all that education and more at the Commercial Photography Conference, hosted by Commercial Photographers International (CPI) and Imaging USA (www.ImagingUSA.org) in Phoenix, Ariz., January 10-13, 2009.

Held at the Phoenix Convention Center, the conference will present a full day of educational programming, featuring some of the biggest names in commercial photography. Following the industry-specific education, attendees can sample the business and technical education offered by Imaging USA (www.ImagingUSA.org) and SEPCON, the Sport & Event Photographers Conference (www.ImagingUSA.org/sepcon/). Their programming themes range from Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom for Photographers to Business First and Sport/Event Photography. Attendees also have unlimited access to the three-day Imaging Expo, the largest photography expo in North America.

The need for quality education in a variety of disciplines is more important than ever before. If you are serious about photography, the Commercial Photography Conference and Imaging USA were created for you. For more information, visit www.myCPI.com, www.ImagingUSA.org, or call 866-886-4989.

Photographer Frank Cricchio Honored for Lifetime of Service and Innovation

Cricchio Professional Photographers of America (PPA) honors Frank Cricchio with the association’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Not given every year, this award has been designated to only a select few, recognizing a lifetime of service and innovation to the field of professional photography. Cricchio will receive the award during PPA’s Awards & Degree Ceremony held January 8, 2007, at PPA’s Imaging USA convention in Tampa, Fla.

Many have reasons why Cricchio is the right choice for this award. In the words of Jack Reznicki, PPA’s President, “Frank has been an educational force in photography for many years and has influenced countless photographers. It's fitting that he receives PPA's Lifetime Achievement Award: one, because he's deserving as a photographer and educator, and two, it's important for photographers today to recognize the leaders who built the foundations that support us and the industry today.

Cricchio is widely known as a dynamic leader and innovator in the photographic profession, and he’s always shared his knowledge and skill with others. With his work selected for exhibitions and collections from the first showing at EPCOT to the Photographic Hall of Fame, Cricchio shows the talent that made his teachings so invaluable.  He was even rated one of the top ten Pictorial Color Print Exhibitors in the World by the Photographic Society of America (1967).

Affiliate Leader Training at Imaging USA

Just added to the program schedule:

Affiliate Leader Training
January 5, 2008
1:00pm – 5:00pm
Tampa Convention Center, 1st Floor, Room 8

This is an intensive program important for anyone serving on a PPA Affiliated organization’s Board of Directors…or anyone with an interest in participating in a Board or leadership position.

Every association—including professional photographic associations like yours—faces challenges in meeting members’ needs, growing membership, and handling finances and programming issues. This important session will touch on the major responsibilities of Board members and leaders, discussing how to meet the challenges we all face today.

There is no cost to participate, but pre-registration (when you register for Imaging USA at www.ImagingUSA.org) is appreciated.

Right where you need to be: Imaging USA 2008 in Tampa

Florida has been described as a paradise by vacationers…and it’s soon to become a photographer’s paradise. Boasting nearly 8,000 attendees and one of the photo industry’s largest tradeshows, Imaging USA (www.ImagingUSA.org) will flood the Tampa Convention Center from January 6-8, 2008.

Presented by an alliance of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the Society of Sport and Event Photographers (SEP), Commercial Photographers International (CPI), and Evidence Photographers International Council (EPIC), the convention features a 500+ booth trade show, several all-inclusive parties and bonus presentations by some of the industry’s biggest names.

Imaging USA, to me, is the sum of all the great PPA [and our partner associations] parts,” commented Jack Reznicki, PPA President. “It's a great gathering of a great clan of professional photographers.

Known for education as well as networking and fun, Imaging USA offers programs that appeal to a wide range of photographers. Educational tracks include Essentials, Wedding/Portrait, Spotlight, School Photography and Adobe Photoshop...all geared towards improving one’s business sense, photographic repertoire, or computer skills. CPI Commercial Photography Conference focuses on issues facing today’s commercial photographers. SEPCON, the Sport and Event Photographers Conference, examines the style and business of sport and event photography. Attendees are free to absorb programs from all three conferences, expanding their minds and skills. And new in 2008, EPIC School will join the other associations, offering evidence photography education from basics to in-depth (for a separate registration).

With speakers such as Howard Schatz, Kevin Kubota and Yervant, Imaging USA is a who’s-who of the professional photography world. Programming runs all day, with a break in the middle so attendees can visit the world-class Imaging Expo without missing any education.

For those who want even more, Imaging USA offers three days of pre-convention programming for an additional fee. These seminars represent PPA’s special business modules, as well as pre-convention offerings from CPI and SEPCON.

Nobody, no other convention, does a better event for professional photographers than Imaging USA, adds Reznicki.

Notable features of Imaging USA 2008:

  • Super Program with Howard Schatz. On January 7, 2008, internationally acclaimed photographer Howard Schatz will present Imaging USA’s Super Program. With seventeen books of his images published, Schatz continues to work simultaneously on many varied projects. In “The Joy is in the Journey,” sponsored by Epson, he will share his process of making award-winning images from the initial idea to preparation, lighting, shooting, editing, and post-production.
  • Plenty of Nightlife. Tampa has something to offer everyone, even the photographers’ families! Attendees can plan time to tour Busch Gardens or party at one of Tampa’s great bars and nightspots. But Imaging USA also hosts two parties, full of great food and fun…and they’re open to all registered attendees.
  • Imaging Expo. This year’s tradeshow is a treasure trove of the latest and greatest – from equipment and services to innovative new products – it’s the largest Imaging Expo ever, and we know photographers will find what they need. With more than 500 booths, top industry vendors fill the tradeshow floor with today’s best solutions for professional photographers.
  • World’s Largest Annual Print Exhibit—Open to the Public. From around the world, more than 2,600 elite images will be on display, constituting the world’s largest annual photographic print exhibit.

The ASP Annual Banquet and Awards then starts at 8:30pm, following PPA's Super Program. Tickets must be purchased from ASP Executive Director Jon Allyn.
